"All killer, no filler" is how we used to describe an album that was packed to the brim with great music, not just a couple hit singles bookending leftovers from a publishing catalog. It's a difficult enough proposition to manage with 10 or 12 songs; Pop Archeology Transmission does it with a full twenty tracks.

It Is What It Is is 99.9% the work of two Portland, OR musicians. Paul Ellis is an accomplished Euro-influenced electronic soundscapist; Kevin Bowen has played everything from ska to jazz to punk versions of Johnny Cash songs. But both approach their songwriting with a common love of 1960s-70s "impressionist" pop, or what's often called "Baroque" pop. "Breezy," "sophisticated" and "literate" are also oft-used descriptors, with comparisons to artists such as XTC, Todd Rudgren, 10cc and Alan Parson Project. Or as one web wag said (so as not to leave any stone unturned) "Baroque Pop, California Pop, Power Pop, British Pop, Psych Pop, New Wave, Art Rock, Synth Pop and Surreal Americana."

The album title probably says it best - It Is What It Is. Judge for yourself.
